Unlock The Power of People
What is DiSC®?
Deepen Your Understanding of Yourself and Others
Everything DiSC® is a personal development learning experience that empowers organizations to ignite culture transformation. By combining self-assessments with flexible facilitation and the Catalyst™ platform, learners will experience moments that inspire lasting behaviour change.
The simple, yet powerful model describes four basic behavioural styles:
D: Dominance
Priorities: Getting immediate results, taking action, challenging themselves and others.
Motivated by: Power and authority, competition, winning, success.
i: Influence
Priorities: Expressing enthusiasm, taking action, encouraging collaboration.
Motivated by: Social recognition, group activities, friendly relationships.
S: Steadiness
Priorities: Giving support, maintaining stability, enjoying collaboration.
Motivated by: Stable environments, sincere appreciation, cooperation, opportunities to help.
C: Conscientiousness
Priorities: Ensuring accuracy, maintaining stability, challenging assumptions.
Motivated by: Opportunities to use expertise or gain knowledge, attention to quality.
Everyone is a blend of all four DiSC styles—usually, one, two, or even three styles stand out. Each person has a unique behavioural profile with different styles and priorities, and no one style is better or worse than the next. We believe that these differences in styles can be extremely valuable. Once you assess them and harness their value, better flight crew communication and healthier working relationships become possible.
First Class Leaders
DiSC® In The Flight Deck
Just like an “autopilot” assists pilots with the technical aspects of flying, DiSC® Catalyst assists pilots with navigating their people skills, leadership styles, and adapting to situations with accuracy and confidence.
Leadership Tendencies in Aviation
Understanding DiSC® profiles is particularly useful for pilots and crew leaders because it offers insights into leadership styles. ‘D’ leaders may excel at taking swift, assertive action during critical situations, ‘i’ leaders might shine at motivating the crew and ensuring effective in-flight communication, ‘S’ leaders could be the ones providing consistent support and promoting a calm atmosphere, while ‘C’ leaders are likely to focus on the details and protocols, double-checking every contingency for a safe flight.
Navigating Conflict In The Skies
Recognizing different DiSC® profiles can be a game-changer for conflict resolution in aviation. For instance, a ‘D’-oriented pilot might directly address and resolve flight deck conflicts, whereas an ‘i’ might employ their communicative skills to defuse tensions. ‘S’ leaders may harmonize different viewpoints, and ‘C’ profiles might methodically work through conflicting data to find a resolution. Applying DiSC® principles means leaders can adapt to potential conflicts in ways that are respectful of others and their own personal style.
Easing Tension On The Flight Deck
Relieving tension within a flight deck may be needed due to high-stakes decisions, urgent problem-solving, or simply the stresses of a long flight. Aviation leaders who understand the dynamics of DiSC® can better recognize their own stress triggers and those of their crew, allowing for a proactive approach to tension management that suits their collective profiles.
Minimizing Misunderstanding Among Crews
Accounting for the diverse ways individuals give and receive information in aviation’s nuanced environment is made easier with DiSC®. Instructions and commands must be precise and understood the first time, so DiSC® assists aviation leaders in tailoring their communication to their team’s preferences—which is crucial for reducing missteps and enhancing crew coordination.
Results
Incorporating DiSC® into aviation leadership means pilots are better equipped to foster an environment of mutual understanding and respect, leading to smoother operations and a stronger culture of safety in the skies.
